We know them all too well – those DIY shows that promise the world (or a new kitchen at least) for less than $100. Okay okay, maybe they’ve never said $100, but you know the kinds of shows we’re talking about: minimal financial output, maximum home revamp and all of a sudden it looks like a display home.
But there is so much more going on behind the scenes that we as a viewer don’t see, like
licensed plumbing trades
performing installations, designers and stylists spinning their magic and cleaners to give the homes a once or twice-over.
So when watching these shows it’s really important to keep an open mind about how renovations and home updates actually play out in real life.
For less than a counter meal and a few bevvys at the pub, you can pick up a multi-pack of shiny new cupboard handles from the hardware store. Cupboard handles can be a dead giveaway of a dated kitchen, and with a screwdriver and some elbow grease, things will be looking newer in no time.
Just make sure your new handles require the same screw configuration as what's existing on your cupboard (eg. Knobs or two-pronged handles with the same distance between screws, etc.).
Our hot tip? Send the corded kettle your mum gave you in 1997 to charity and purchase something sleek and new.
And while you’re at it, consider other small whitegoods like toasters and pod coffee machines, all of which don’t need to cost a bomb anymore. Shop Kmart or other discount stores at sale time to pick up some lovely looking appliances on the cheap.
As we mentioned with the appliances above, department stores have come a long way in the trendy homewares department.
For less than a pineapple (that’s 50 bucks) you can frolic like a kid in a candy shop adding uber-cool homewares, pots, plants, cookbooks and more to your trolley for adorning benchtops and shelves. Hit up Pinterest for design ideas if you’re unsure so you ensure your “look” works.
While your friends will be seeing green with envy, you’ll be admiring all your pretty plants. Indoor plants have made a huge comeback in recent years, requiring little maintenance and can be really easy to keep alive if you’re not of the green-thumbed folk.
Jazz up your window sills, shelves or dead space area with varieties like devils ivy, succulents, cactus, monstera deliciosa, fiddle leaf figs and more.
Alright, alright, so we cheated on this one. It doesn’t fall into the under $100 category at all BUT it is the perfect way to get that updated kitchen look WITHOUT the cost of a complete renovation.
